book in hand - lives in the balance

A function of the fact that I have indeed remembered what I love about the social sector of work, I have becoming increasingly interested in the ways in which our society functions. Not from a Sociologist's perspective, as that is how I spent my four years at Laurier, but from the perspective of a person living outside of the social activist bubble - a daily reminder that not everyone thinks that people should be helped.
Before my class on Tuesday night at George Brown college, I stepped into the bookstore - maybe a naseous undertone of my longing to be a lifelong student? - to see what they had. I managed to pick up some goodies. A course pack from a gender class (gender analysis in college? Maybe George Brown should have been my post grad location) and a book - called 'Lives in the Balance: Ontario's Social Audit' put together by the Interfaith Social Assistance Reform Coalition.
For those who need a reminder of how we have deserted the bottom of the socio economic pyramid - here it is!
On a more positive note - I have been extremely motivated by the amount of 'vintage' (aka. Value village finds) online stores, auctions, and etsy sellers… thank you for reminding the world that reusing is a better option than recycling. Maybe I can sell my VV boutique scores for hundreds of dollars on the web!
One of my favourites - beautiful photography.
