earth day

So first, my frustration…
Why is it that everyone in the world needs a one day reminder to be environmentally friendly?? Why is it, that everyone feels proud that on earth day, they bring their lunch, take TTC, use a travel mug, and walk outside for the first time all year. Why - when there are many many people who do this year round - do people feel as though they are saving the world by committing to one day in 365?
I know the argument stands that earth day is a day for everyday people to see how easy it is - to be a part of something bigger, and for businesses to celebrate earth advantages.
However
When the metro - my second choice daily newspaper - prints proudly on the front cover "In honour of earth day, Metro Toronto will be published on recycled paper every day this week" my frustration sets in. Thank you metro, for making a choice that costs you less money, and makes you look good to consumers, and is environmentally friendly - FOR ONE WEEK ONLY.
Disasterous.
So friends, I beg. Try to bring a lunch one day more a week than normal - every week. Don’t wash clothes every single time you wear them - every week. Don't shower - daily. Get a recylced fold up bag from Fresh, and keep it in your purse - daily. Bring a travel mug, and stainless steel water bottle (for those with fears of plastic) - daily.
THESE are the things that make a difference - not a one day commitment to follow a trend.

*sigh.
Please excuse my sarcasm for the rest of this post...

Reports show that Ontario is the second greenest province according to a recent "Green Provincial Report Card" - right behind BC (of course).
Great news - right? Maybe, if a 67% was an admirable grade. How embarassing.
My great surprise? PEI got the lowest mark, as a result of "poor records on protecting land, car dependancy, green building, energy efficiency, and environmental rights". Guess they missed the part where most of the island is powered by wind power. Not that that's important…

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights has begun construction, as a result of a $1 million donation from the most undermined, oppressed and affected group of people in Canada - Assembly of Manitoba Cheifs announced that this is an important project to them, as it helps tell their story.
Wow - government, take note.

In other news, US Homeland Security Secritary, Janet Napolitano stated that 'terrorists' (aka. All foreigners) enter the US from Canada - including 9-11 attackers.
Oh wait. Wasn't it investigated, and subsequently proven, that all attackers in 9-11 entered the US from non-North American cities, and flew into US major airports? Riiiiiiiiiight….
Canadian ambassador Michael Wilson made sure to set her straight. Thank goodness.

Sad story of the day: Leonardo DiCaprio's continued, underlying, and subtle efforts since he was practically born to be eco-friendly have been blasted by being voted the eco-friendliest celeb in the world - alongside Oprah.
Damn the world. I don't even think I need to comment on this one.
One has driven a "smart car" for over 10 years, and the other flies to Africa consistantly to build schools for sexual assault… *ahem… underprivledged girls.

East coast travel - a great article promoting east coast travel in Canada.
Despite the fact that the author has never been to any of these places, I comend the trip down thoughtful lane.
After lugging a backpack around the east coast a few years ago with Jake, I recommend any trip to any province out there. Wonderful. Absolutly wonderful. I was in three provinces on my 21st birthday. I love Canada.
