I have discovered that there is this wonderful thing that some people refer to as sleep - and I hear that it allows you to wake feeling refreshed, and ready to face the world.
I have not expereinced this "sleep" in quite some time… this weekend was no exception.
Thursday: I had a presentation at work on Friday which had been laid on me Thursday at 3pm… this meant being at work for 7:00 on Friday morning. As a result I stayed at a friends and did not get to sleep until late - after my first Zumba class, and a long conversation with an old friend (while packing and streaming lady gaga videos). However, the commute the next morning was a mere 15 minutes - and it was glorious.
Friday: after a longgggggggggggggggg day at work (work is killing me), I went out for coffee at green beanery with a friend. This involved talking at high levels about scavenger hunts, dinosaurs, and the 'nature vs. nurture'. We headed to BMV - he had never been, and I have packed all my books, thinking that 'book of negros' would last me a month and a half while moving. Idiot. I picked up a ton of books, and he got three (after saying, "this is awesome" - uhhhh… I know!). He also bought me "status anxiety" by Alain de Botton which he had recommended, and figured he would just pick up for me. I know nice people. I purchased:
- multiple timothy findley (love love love him*) as I just wanted to grab a few to build my timothy findley reportoire: 'the last of the crazy people' (his first book); 'stones' ; 'dinner along the amazon'
- fight club (chuck palianiuk)
- invisible monsters (chuck palianiuk): which I actually just finished reading a friend's copy of, but I loved it and had to have it
- 'a million little pieces' (james frey): have veered away from this book for a long long time, as with the whole oprah controversy (I avoid anything related to oprah if at all possible), but I just finished reading his newest book 'bright shiny morning' , and LOVED it. Figured I should give it a try. Next on the docket - 'my friend leonard'.
- 'of mice and men' (John Steinbeck)
I headed home with burrito in hand, from the new location of big fat burrito at bloor and bathurst, and stopped in quickly at home. My lovely cousin was proposed to her by her equally lovely (now fiancee) last Wednesday, and I headed out to eglington and bayview to hang with them for the night - with gift in hand: the diners, drive-ins and dives book/cookbook = amazing. We had a good night with lots of talking. Lots and lots. Unfortunately, since I get along with my cousin way too well, I didn't get home until about 1:30.
Saturday: moving day - again. My dad came with his truck to get the last load of "big stuff" - my mattress, shelves, etc. at 8:30 - because he had a 'busy day ahead'. Ugh. Between the two of us we managed, but I was certainly able to cross 'workout' off my list for Saturday. I ran some errands (once my dad left), like paying my WAY overdue library fines, grabbing some shorts I needed for running, and tried to get in a 1/2 hour nap. Never works. Showered, packed (horribly - more on that later), and picked up my friend to drive to waterloo. I went to Wilfrid Laurier University, and being a don in my fourth year, I am now watching my students graduate this year. Last week during my basketball game/beer/pizza hangout, my friend and I made grand schemes to visit - I needed to visit my students, and take them out in celebration, and he just wanted to visit.
I met up with my roomate from first year, Cait - who hated me, and therefore we moved out. Needless to say, over time (she started dating one of my best friends), we moved on, and she's one of my closest friends. Her and my friend just ran off to Maui and were married - I was visiting for the first time since, and bringing wedding gifts. It was at this point that I discovered what was in my suitcase: 3 tank tops; 1 pair of leggings; contact solution, case, and glasses; one pair of high heels; one pair of 'chucks'; bottle of vodka. Needless to say, I had no long sleeves, no toothbrush/toothpaste, or pants. Cait and I decided to go shopping - we chatted, shopped, and I managed to get my life in order with a cardigan (it was STUPIDLY cold in waterloo). Another mutual friend popped up, and the four of us hung out for a bit, playing video games.
I met up with my students for dinner, and treated them to a congratulations dinner - at thai sun in waterloo. It's so nice to watch them grow, and think that when I met them, I was their age. I really enjoy the people that they have become (and who they were in first year), and I can honestly say I hope to continue to be friends with them, because they are definitely people I would be friends with in other circumstances. After tons of talking, we grabbed starbucks and headed back to their apt. and spent the night chatting. I ended up going out, but it was so nice to hang out with them in such a casual manner.
After hearing from other friends (and knowing that my students could not go out), I met a few more people at the fox - this was a university staple, and certainly a weird memory. Tons of fun, as there were people there I would have not expected to bump into - and upon realizing how cheap drinks are in waterloo, I vowed this would be my money saver for the year: drink in waterloo only. It was a good night, but unfortunately ended with large amounts of cigarellos being smoked. Grape flavour. Cheyenne in name. By men - this was hilarious. I headed back to my friends - walking through arrests left right and centre - and slept.
Sunday: had to wake up early (again), as I had to work at 12 in toronto. Brought my student her clothes back (see "did not pack proper clothing" above), and said bye. My friend and I grabbed some booster juice for the road, and listened to beenie man, sean paul and other amazing 'oldies' on our drive back. I worked all day yesterday, and after work had enough time to come home, grab something to eat, and head out for an apt showing with my three new roomates - daniel, denver and new addition drew. We then scoped the area, and denver grabbed the longest piece of pizza I have ever seen. Conclusion? Good place - too close to the 7-11 next door = I would spend too much money on slurpees. I left, and met up with another friend, and we went to magic oven for pizza. Good food, good company. Commentary on google stalking, jason statham, and tiger woods' colour being a factor in his fame.
Got home late. Not enough sleep. I'm exhausted. But again, how can I complain when my weekends are filled with so many amazing friends.
I can't wait for my leftover pizza for lunch.
* more on timothy findley, and my love for him (and two of my favourite books of all time, "the wars" and "pilgrim" in a coming blog entry.
