I'm a planner. Though I have a problem remembering dates, numbers, addresses, and so on, I need everything planned incessintly.
case in point: I was rifling through a box at my parents house, that they had pulled together from the bottom of my closet floor. Filled with memories (and/or junk, depending on your definition), I found countless amusing items. Cards from old boyfriends (aka. Grade 7 crushes), notes from friends, photos with bad hair, 'momentos' that I have no longer have recollection of their meaning, and so on. Four boxes worth. However, one of the things I did keep (along with my four shoe boxes of greeting cards, saved since gr. 3), were my elementary school planners. These planners - among multiple other details, that I am now happy, and a little worried, that I recorded - noted my outfits for every day of the week… for five years straight.
I have a bit of a problem with details. Some would say, detail oriented to a fault. I lose the forest… because I love tree bark way too damn much.
Needless to say, I forgot that Moleskine planners are highly sought after, and as a result, do not go on sale, and are extremely difficult to find. I visited 6 chapters/indigo stores to find none. Zero. Zip. I thought I would have to change to a different type of planner (I also have a problem with setteling - I don't want a planner I half like. I want the one I like. Period).
I called all over toronto to find my planner - behold, Outer Layer. I ran to buy one. And hugged it the whole way home. And spent the night recording my next two months worth of appts. Phew!! Crisis diverted!!
As a result, I feel as though everyone should have the tools to determine the best planner for them - if only to make me feel less bad about myself. (humour me). So - a list of awesome planners to keep everyone's sanity in tact…
Sweet Spot has a list of the best calendars, and best planners for 2010.
Day Runner has consistantly useful planners - for all different types of lives. They're starting to create designer looks as well, which is great. I personally like the classic look of a plain black colour, but I would not be opposed to a paisley print every now and then. They also have refills, so you can use the same cover year after year.
At-A-Glance was the planner I used to use - simply because they have the option for day, week, month at a glance. I like week… but I also can see why the monthly is a good option. I used to use their wall calendars (LARGE size) to get through university deadlines… not that it helped me from procrastinating…

I digress.
My plan was to head out on boxing day - a full 5 days prior to my needing a new planner - and get a 50% off planner for 2010. Grand schemes of my yearly planner (*) being a steal at $13.00 instead of it's normal $26.00 were dancing through my head on Christmas day (Yes - it's an illness).Needless to say, I forgot that Moleskine planners are highly sought after, and as a result, do not go on sale, and are extremely difficult to find. The mother of all planners (HA!!! Pun intended) - the woman's day planner. Pages for budgeting, month at a glance, week at a glance, etc. all in one planner. Amazing.
