the block that keeps on blocking.

when you decide you want to be a writer, it's not immediately that writer's block hits. it's not a sudden brick wall - like you're an undertrained marine, and the rest of the giant muscular people are racing around you and climbing the wall as though they have suction cups on their hands and feet.
it sneaks up on you. one day you're writing things in your notebook, and you're in happy land, and you've written in your long term goals that you'd like to write a book and who cares what kind of book because you can write anything so it's perfect! and then, you find excuses not to write. you have to get to the gym, and you've run out of ideas, and of course there's that person who will be reading your writing, and you don't want to hurt their feelings. and all of a sudden it's been months and you sit down to come up with a real, meaningful thing to write about, and you realize it's been there.... for as long as you can remember without ever having actually arrived. your mind is blank and you can't think of a single thing worth writing.
you can come up with a grocery list - and, only with the assistance of a pinterest recipe that took 45 minutes to decide on - and sometimes you can jot down small tidbits of information that come to mind every day or so. sometimes even - while sitting in a session, seminar, training module or something else that's rather important to listen to - you can spout out a page worth of thought, and it gives you a little more hope that there's something still in there.
and most other days, you sit down. and while it always seemed funny, and even a bit ironic in sex and the city when carrie sat with the cursor blinking on the screen, you stare. for hours. (sometimes at brad pitt)
i received a bit of advice from a friend lately - a friend who has made a life out of writing for other people, and for himself. spending days and nights writing both what people ask for, and what makes him happy. he shared with me - while we were discussing the process of writing a book, and what it means in the context of a full life - that a writer should spit out the first draft. make it ugly, make it awful and get it all out. there's room for editing later - the important part is getting it out. it resonated so soundly with me, as i was at the end of a 4 week dry streak of not finding anything to write.
that creative block that gets us - no matter your creativity - it's the launching of the action in creative pursuits.
i'm going to the art gallery. take THAT writer's block.

family day

happy family day to those in BC. i worked today, and was able to spend time with the people i consider maybe my third family - my colleagues in BC. watching the olympics (my fave charles hamelin winning gold - amazing). prepping for a huge event tomorrow night. it's all going well.

i love my family. so, shout out to them. there are no words for what my family means to me... all i can say is that i get to spend 2 weeks with them, starting saturday. so happy family day to me.
also, this song. if you're not on this tip, get on it.

things i'm in love with this week

this weekend is a blessing - i'm learning to take action in things i've been putting off for a long long time. i'm tying some things up at work, and executing on some upcoming excitment. all of which will lead to my impeding departure on vacation in A WEEK. i'm shaking in anticipation. i haven't been this excited for vacation in a long long time. it's going to be amazing. and until then, it's preperation. lots.
this weekend will also involve some art gallery, some dumpling fest, some dinner with old friends (one visiting from toronto - YAY). some potlucking, some fitness (bathing suit vacations - you know). all of the makings of a busy and great weekend.

this week. things that are keeping me sane, and grounded.
--------------------------
excitement over the new jimi hendrix biopic... with (drumroll) andree 3000. perfection.
--------------------------
amazon's listing of 100 books to read in a lifetime. which is perfect for me. (also, anyone have any recommendations i can't live without reading?).
--------------------------
this song which is both beautiful and haunting, and it's accompaniment of this monumental video. mount kimble is incredible, and continuously amazes me through music, musicianship and art.
--------------------------
with all that's going on with the olympics, it's still a moment in time for the world that allows us to enjoy what makes us humans. the mistakes, the power, the humour, the love. the sports (duh). and while I don't support the russian stance on.... well, much to be honest.... i support the people who have worked their whole lives to get to where they are in their sport. and, i support sport. which should come as no surprise. and what it gives to the lives of those who participate - both physically, and emotionally. both players and spectators. so, of course, this week i'm heavily anticipating olympic opening ceremonies (this morning) and the sports which are to follow.
---------------------------
hope everyone has a fantastic weekend... stay warm wherever you are!

things i'm in love with this week

this week i collapsed into the age old stereotype of every event planner - peaked at the event, and then spent the following night in bed with a migraine. needless to say, it wasn't particularly productive. nevertheless, i still found some awesomeness to get me through the week.
things i'm in love with this week.
--------------
this week saw: helen mirren twerking (oh dear - none of us will ever be that good at that age); this piece on what life is actually like - and, i suppose, moreso on the realities of sharing true life on the internet; miley cyrus actually started spouting some very well founded advice; what the new year holds for all of us, in the year of the horse; two of my faves, CLEARLY totally understand super bowl (oh man i can't wait for sunday) (sorry for the buzzfeed overload).
--------------
this quiz that tells me what i should be doing with my life (despite having a tough time deciding between sports film and documentary - what am i doing with my liiiiiiife??). turns out, i should be an astronaut. only if i get to have that hair.
--------------
being a spike jonze fan (HUGE fan) (apparently not) and only finding out NOW that jonze is the star (and director - which i guess is cool if you're into that sort of thing) in this ground breaking dance mega hit. also worthy of noting - this was filmed at a time when no one had cells, cameras on them, etc. dancing your ass off for the sake of pleasing the public. apparently that's what the torrance community dance group was all about.

--------------

ok that's it today. i'm going to drink wine. just killin' friday - clearly.
happy weekend dudes!

things i'm in love with this week

it's been a crazy week - i had a huge project and a big launch monday, so i've been working non stop, and can proudly say everything looks good, and is rolling forward. AND i've been looking at my vision and what it means for 10 years from now, and what it means for 5 years from now AND what it means for a year from now.... and, every day from now. motivation is key. this weekend is necessary, and i will embrace all of it.

things i'm in love with this week....
this video of miley cyrus singing dolly parton. i wish she would just stick to country - her voice is so beautiful in this amazing song.

--------------
since i'm working on reading a book a week in 2014, this list of books, curated by Judy Blume and Lena Dunham is a dream come true - two women who have been, and continue to open up feminism for women to explore and dissect and all of those things men and women need to be doing all the time or else the conversation goes stale.
--------------
i've been totally hooked on the website clementine daily lately, and in this piece in particular really hooked me (in keeping with relationships with women, and role models). 10 questions to ask your mother. love these questions for any mother in your life - whether it's a friend who's a mother, a grandmother, or your own. a beautiful list of conversation startser to really get down to what they are all about.
--------------
james franco (one of my faves) is writing for vice. and sticking his face on everyone elses. it's amazing.
--------------
hope everyone has an amazing and wonderful weekend - fill it with great things!
