on large companies

"jeremy asked me if i liked my work.
'i think big companies are like marching bands. you know the big secret about marching bands, don't you?'
'no, what is it?'
'even if half the band is playing random notes, it still sounds kind of like music. the concealment of failure is built right into them. it's like the piano - as long as you play only the black keys, not the white ones, it'll sound ok, but on the other hand it'll never sound like real music either'"

things i'm in love with

this week was a busy one with a visitor, a goodbye (when she flew off to whitehorse), a heavy work week with a great event, trying to fit in some fitness (tough when your schedule is off beat). this week has been a lot about finding inspiration. for lots of things, but primarily to keep me moving forward.
what's inspiring me this week? lots of stuff. let me share some of it. i've been really digging some awesome videos lately. from near and far. so this will be a video heavy post. deal with it.

this stunningly beautiful surfing video from fergal smith. it gives me chills - and not just because i can't imagine how cold surfing in the ocean during winter in ireland would be. it's the most perfect surfing video since i sat and watched jack johnsons 'thicker than water' 8 times in a row when i first got it in university.

these goodies - as i've been using tumblr more lately to try to keep the inspiration flowing. images, photos, graphics, quotes, and lots of other goodies to keep me moving forward. looking at some creative ventures to keep things new and fresh, and it's images and items like this that give me something to grasp for a creative spark.

this quote. from one of my favourite authors, sherman alexie. (via)

over the past little while, i got to be a small part of a huge project with the lululemon lab, and keighty at tight club... this video - produced by the lab's head designer jean okada - is a small part of it. but it's beautiful, and inspiring, and i have been watching it non stop since it premiered last night.

and this beautiful video. which speaks for itself.

and that's all for tonight... though i'm sure i'll remember i have missed something that resonated hugely with me this week... it's been that kind of a week.
happy weekend all!

it's a busy one

this week, that is. due to a friend visiting from far far away, and some work obligations, and other stuff going on (my phone was almost stolen, and i lost my bus pass!), it's been a bit of a topsy turney week. so please forgive the lack of posts. a (very) late weekend in summary coming shortly, and some other posts of valid content.
for now. here is a very awesome gif of a very cool looking babe spinning.

my (post dated) weekend in summary

i'm backdating this post, as i didn't have time in the excitement of my friend visiting, to post at my regular time. this is sort of like blogger cheating, but my blog began as a way for me to keep a virtual scrapbook of life... so that's how it will continue.

remnants from a movie night date with cole; the market in the park saturday morning; pizza night - we're wild and crazy; the sunset from home; breakfast of champions - with a saucy mug to boot; the sunset at kits beach; chocolate vegan heaven.

the weekend was filled with movie dates with coleo (who's finally back in vancouver again!), picking my friend alex up from the airport after her long day of travel from bali; sushi dates and homemade pizza, lots of talking and catching up. a saturday morning market jaunt, a bit of work, and then a bit of home time, and lots of working - not without a yoga stop (to truly show alex what vancouver is all about), and then a trip to kits beach for vegan trifle and my favourite place to watch the sunset.
i love when my friends come to visit - it takes the homesick away.

things i'm in love with

it's friday. for me, fridays bring a day off, they usually bring two days off. they bring a chance to sleep in, to catch up on 'paperwork' (if you can believe someone like me has paperwork), and a chance to clean, organize, be active, and try to get things together a bit.
and TODAY, friday brings me a friend all the way from asia - a friend moving home, who is making a pit stop in vancouver for almost a week to hang out. so, while i'm working lots while she's here, i'm also giddy with excitement to see her, and hang out with her for the first time in a year.
other things that make me giddy today and this week.... for weekend perusal.

i've already written about it, but THIS essay from rob delaney on why he supports human rights, in a woman's rights to choose. and, in somewhat related related, but heartwrenching news, dr. henry morgentaler died. a man who made safe something that women have never wanted, but have needed to find in safe and hygenic circumstances. read this article - it's perfect.

and, because we're talking about mysogyny - dustin hoffman on playing a woman in Tootsie (1982)
If I was going to be a woman, I would want to be as beautiful as possible. And they said to me, ‘Uh, that’s as beautiful as we can get you.’ And I went home and started crying to my wife, and I said, ‘I have to make this picture.’ And she said, ‘Why?’ And I said, ‘Because I think I’m an interesting woman when I look at myself on screen, and I know that if I met myself at a party, I would never talk to that character because she doesn’t fulfill, physically, the demands that we’re brought up to think that women have to have in order for us to ask them out.’ She says, ‘What are you saying?’ and I said, ‘There’s too many interesting women I have not had the experience to know in this life because I have been brainwashed.’ It was not what it felt like to be a woman. It was what it felt like to be someone that people didn’t respect, for the wrong reasons. I know it’s a comedy. But comedy’s a serious business.”

things that are inspiring me lately - earthy rocks and gems, middle fingers, a bit of 35mm greatness, and some planetary sarcasm.

i'm in love with will ferrell. and sandwiches. and this skit with jimmy fallon who i don't actually like, but like this.

and on that note - the sandwiches, middle finger, and dustin hoffman note, happy weekend!
