art battle on a tuesday

last night I went to my first art battle in Toronto… I didn’t know what to expect (though I have to admit, I was hoping for paint brush stabbings and paint covered wrestlers), but I walked in, handed the lovely gentleman at the front door my $15, and he gave me my ballots.
turns out, I was behind the rest of the crowd – as they were on art battle 24.
the idea is pretty simple (and I kicked myself for never having thought of something like this for theme birthdays): 16 competitors, who each get 20 minutes to prepare the best piece of art they can. Round 1 and 2 displays 10 painters each round (8 who enter, as well as 2 people whose names are drawn from the audience – and I don’t think I need to tell you, this made me excited about the possibility…. So of course, next time, my name will be in that can). They have 20 minutes to paint anything they want, while the crowd watches, mulls around, and gets to essentially participate in the process. Once time is up, everyone in the crowd uses their voting ballots (labeled for rounds 1, 2 and 3), to determine which of the paintings will enter the final round. the top two painters from the first two rounds then proceed to the finals.
the winner of the finals is determined in the same method, and receives a cash prize. Then all the paintings are put up for silent auction, so anyone can take them home.
I would never ever call myself an artist. I paint, and use many mediums to create art – but I have become comfortable with the fact that I will never ever be a famous painter. The things that these people did in 20 minutes was fantastic and amazing. I can really let the photos speak for themselves, because no matter what I comment on in regards to each person’s brush strokes or technique, there’s nothing that can replace watching each of these artists create something from nothing in a matter of minutes. Things like that heighten your appreciation of art so much – you walk away in awe.
I was invited by alex, whose sister in law Cat, was competing. Cat is an unbelievable artist, and made it to the finals. A few of my other favourites from the night:
From top to bottom: Cat Reyto (round 2); Ira lipkin (round 1); yang cao (round 1); rob jolicoeur (round 2); rob jolicoeur and cat’s pieces completed (round 2); all the artists (round 3 - finals); Cat Reyto (round 3 -finals); alex jones (round 3 - finals); yang cao (round 3); winning painting
check out the artist's websites - next time around, I’ll be posting on my twitter when the time is nigh for another battle. This even sends ideas of jewelry battles, and art battle parties through my head… too. Much. Exciting. Stuff. to do.

stunning simplicity in geometry

I am so infatuated with emedemarta. It serves as a sort of diary of the life and happenings of the creator of jewelry… and I am smitten.
Her photos are like her pieces (shared below) – simple, elegant, and yet, edgy by being subtle. I find myself captured by the small pieces of her daily life, and through her 1 photo stories, I learn more about her than about some people who write daily, in lengthy prose.

I adore her jewelry as well… her pieces are SO simple, and elegant… and yet still manage to be perfect in their industrial edginess. Her painted plywood, and use of colours with brass…. I only wish I thought of them myself.

my weekend in summary

my friday evening - snacks and a good book (the absolutely true story of a part time indian); my new favourite drink - everyone MUST try this; the amazing afternoon sun on friday; adventuring on a cold saturday; nails painted; rock balancing at the bar; beer and basketball on sunday; thackeray's vanity and sons of anarchy season 3 in bed
Friday: I worked from home on friday, which I would like to say means a relaxing day – however, it usually ends in me working far later than I would, were I in the office. so I worked quite late, and then took a walk out to get my hair cut, and get some quick groceries. I enjoyed the remainder of the sun on the porch, and read the rest of my book, ‘the absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian’ (sent from my lovely friend alex, who – living on a reserve as a teacher right now – attests that it is one of the closest to the truth that she has ever read). I wish I could say I went out, enjoyed the night, but instead, I will truthfully admit that once the sun went down I did laundry, lots of laundry, made a good dinner, and then crawled into bed at 10:30, and watched sons of anarchy. I was asleep by midnight. and it was glorious.‬
Saturday: woke up nice and early to meet Erin to grab some leftovers that were remaining at her place from the weekend before. we had a catch up over coffee, and then I walked the long walk home - battling the cold wind, too stubborn to acknowledge that it wasn't as nice as it was supposed to be. stopped for some additional groceries, and made some vegan poutine for lunch. because of the weather, my head was killing me, so I got into bed and spent most of the afternoon doing low key things: watching sons of anarchy and napping. managed to fit in a visit with a friend, as well as a pop by at the local bar to try out the drink that Jason, the owner, had invented for me, to accommodate the whipped cream vodka I requested. I love my bar.
Sunday: woke up after a fair sleep in, and met my former roommate Alicia, for basketball and beer (and some lunch). watched my favourite team Baylor lose to the team I chose to advance in the tournament (sort of a win win for me), and then moved to starbucks with her so her and I could mark, and write (respectively). we parted ways early evening, and I fit in a good chat with my parents on the drive home (hands free, I promise!). then made dinner, and cleaned a bit, before settling into bed with some jewelry making supplies. made 1 of the pieces for Thackeray's Vanity's spring line, and did a repair and renew job for a girl at work. watched the final episode of season 3 sons of anarchy (seeing a trend here?), and went to bed nice and early...
Hope everyone enjoyed some amazing weather this weekend! Especially since Monday morning brought us a revisitation of winter weather - got all the sun we could!
